Over 20 prior to this job ago the owner Birkenstock Australia installed a yellow enzie spiral stair in his city showroom in Centreway Arcade Melbourne. The stair was installed by our then newbie Andrew. Skip foward 20 years the owner of Birkenstock was amazed to see Andrew turn up to install his double flight spiral stair at the rear of his new Australian HQ.
Originally the same design that was used in his Centerplace Arcade was specified, an enzie classic H series spiral staircase. However enzie suggested to the Architect, Melbourne Design Studios, that there would be an opportunity for some branding should the specification be changed to an Enclose design with a laser-cut balustrade design. This design would also offer the benefit of a solid shield balustrade which would add to the perception of safety on this double flight spiral.
The architect was excited but the client was nervous, after all he’d been enjoying the openness and the elegant proportions of his enzie classic spiral stair was over 20 years. Danyelle Miller from Melbourne Design Studios had a solution. She mocked up the two designs and posted it on their Facebook page to gauge the publics response. The feedback was interesting, with votes tallying up for both design however the Enclose narrowly won out. The feedback also lead to changes to the colour and final detailing of the balustrade which lead to the final design as you see it today.
